JJVS at a Glance
Jagran Jan Vikas Samiti (JJVS) is a grassroots organisation working
in the field of Traditional Health Systems and Integrated Rural
Development. Based in Udaipur, Rajasthan (India), JJVS was founded
in 1985 and has earned broad public credibility as a centre of progressive
social activity.
JJVS is a non-profit voluntary organisation registered under the
Society Registration Act 1958. JJVS is also registered under the
Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA) of 1976 with the Ministry
of Home Affairs.
Our Vision
JJVS has focussed its efforts on solutions that provide direct socio-economic
improvements to marginalised populations. Typically, it is the rural
poor and tribal communities who have been neglected the most. JJVS
was formed around the idea of local empowerment and self-help.
Our vision for a healthier and more just society focuses on these
objectives:
• Supporting appropriate rural development and agriculture-based
industries
• Creating a clearinghouse of local solutions for local problems
• Increasing awareness of health and education opportunities
• Improving the effectiveness of Government plans and programmes
• Conserving the environment
• Organizing the community for coordinated campaigns
JJVS is committed to an egalitarian social order where basic needs
are fulfilled, economic inequalities are minimised, and where democratic
decision-making provides for the common good.
Our Work
To implement our vision, JJVS has centred on two broad areas of
work:
• Traditional Health Systems: We are instrumental in the documentation
and promotion of traditional (non-allopathic) health care practices.
This indigenous knowledge, largely based on herbal and naturopathic
remedies as practiced by the village wise men, or "Gunis",
is often the most appropriate and accessible form of public health
care available to marginal communities.
• Integrated Rural Development: We advise and implement small-scale
rural development projects within the context of holistic, sustainable
environmental practice. Poor rural communities are adversely affected
by large-scale mining, dam and resource extraction operations as
well as by natural disasters such as recurrent drought. JJVS is
instrumental in protesting these operations and working with stakeholders
to develop sane alternatives.
Our health programmes are established in 6 states across India,
while our rural development work is spread over the entire Tribal
Belt of the Udaipur District, including Sarada, Salumber, Girwa,
Jhadol and Dhariyawad Tehsil.
Our People
JJVS has a team of 22 permanent staff, 7 part time staff and more
than 250 field volunteers. We conduct our project activities under
the guidance of project coordinators who are directly responsible
to the JJVS management team. For specialist advice, JJVS maintains
a network of experts and consultants who are competent in various
technical disciplines. Please reference the attached summary of
staff for more details.
