Achievements
Core focus area: • Revitalization
of traditional system of medicine
• Promotion of Indian culture and women’s development
• Women’ empowerment

Traditional health systems:
Despite the medical evolution India has experienced, the marginal
communities have still hardly any access to public health care. To
provide an alternative, JAGRAN has almost single-handily revived the
interest in historically proven traditions. Traditional healers or
“Gunis” are non-degree-holder doctors possessing remarkable
competencies in solving typical rural health problems, like chronic
pains, Malaria, Asthma, leucorrhoea, menorrhiagia, stomach disorders,
kidney stone, Arthritis, pneumonia, eye & ear trouble, Piles,
heart trouble, bone setting etc... JAGRAN has identified and interviewed
more than 1100 Gunis, establishing a large network for sharing knowledge.
An herbal farm of 16 Ha land is established at Kurabad. We have also
supported the establishment of 26 herbal farms and 525 herbal gardens.
About 54 hospitals are run by these gunis in different district of
Rajasthan. By means of certification, training and knowledge exchange
JAGRAN has turned the Gunis in a legitimate alternative for the costly
and scarce allopathic treatment. Till date 48 different formulations
have been registered with ‘Department of Ayurveda, Govt. of
Rajasthan’. Apart from this the organization has developed traditional
herbal nutritional formulations for mother and child care for eg.
Chawanparash, Kaunch Paak, Mogar and Battisa. About 3 lac patients
took treatment and benefited by these hospitals and about 1100 health
camps organized in Rajasthan, Delhi and Mumbai.
To equip the midwives and local medical practitioners, we have organised
44 Guni training programmes and 8 midwives trainings. Besides training
traditional local practitioners, JAGRAN has informed the communities
of the importance of proper immunization and balanced diet for both
mother and child. Health days and fairs are being organized to emphasize
the essential health care requirements for young children. In case
of emergencies, JAGRAN has equipped itself with a small emergency
health unit at Guni Ashram-Kurabar. A National Guni
Forum was established in 1998, to provide a platform to the
Gunis from all over the country to come together and share their views
on various issues pertaining to traditional system of medicine. JJVS
organized national level seminars and conferences of the forum.
Natural resource management: • Rain
water harvesting practices has become a vital part of the community
• Community assets developed- The impacts has improved the overall
scenario of the area • Area specific IGP has mitigated the
affects of drought and infused the spirit of self help among the community
• The NRM & community centric work of JJVS are being replicated
in other areas • The organization has established itself
as a leading NRM organization.
JAGRAN’s endeavour in enhancing rural infrastructure and rural
water management has spread to over 103 villages of Girva, Sarada,
Salumber, Dhariyawad, Jhadol and Gogunda blocks of Udaipur District
& Aspur block of Dungarpur district. With experience of over 20
years we have positioned ourselves as the lead liaison agency in Rajasthan
for drought relief and water management programs. In cooperation with
the Peoples Science Institute we have conducted an extensive survey
among key stakeholders, like rural community representatives and scientific
experts, providing a set of recommendations focusing on local alternative
solutions to water scarcity. Many watershed projects are being executed
and under process. Together with the local communities, JAGRAN has
initiated several water conservation and retention measures and has
set up development committees for monitoring and maintenance. In period
of droughts these project are run based on food for work and cash
for work programs. Outcomes: • Support
of the government • Active participation of community
• Optimum utilization of available resources • Maximum
utilization of people’s competency • Cost effectiveness
has been increased in the programs Self-help group
(SHG):
In almost all development efforts, JAGRAN encourage the people to
form groups. By organising trainings, workshops and meetings we have
assisted 371 self-help-groups to set up small-scale commercial enterprises
with direct benefit to the local communities. In these groups 5609
are women and 2015 are men. Total amount collected by these groups
is about Rs. 2.3 million. In over 300 group meetings, issues like
development programmes and cooperative savings were highlighted, resulting
in more than Rs 1 million of investments in various local schemes
We are promoting formation of a cooperative federation (Gatod Mahasangh)
of these SHG’s for joint efforts for economic improvement and
income generation programmes. The federation tries to motivate mutual
aid among the rural communities. Education and Awareness:
JAGRAN believes that progress begins with literacy. Education is an
important tool to create awareness and awaken the people in the rural
areas. Therefore we have made a tremendous effort to stimulate the
people to develop their reading and writing skills, by creating non-formal
education centres in villages for educating tailor-made programs for
women. Besides providing education to the women, JAGRAN has focussed
on primary education so that later children could be admitted to government
schools for further studies. By means of workshops and trainings we
have made them more aware of the evils of alcoholism, taught them
the importance of environment restoration and told them about the
social ills of child marriage. People movement:
A part of the being self-sustainable is to be able to speak up for
your basic rights. Despite the advancement in information and communication,
tribal communities are hardly aware of their rights. JAGRAN organises
civil rights awareness camps and establishes local self-governance
bodies in different villages. Until now JAGRAN has been defending
the rights of the rural communities and representing them in cases
of large-scale mining, environmental pollution and displacement. In
the long run we would like to establish people right organisations,
which will be able to lobby and advocate for the human rights at local
or perhaps at national level.
JAGRAN supported following public movements: •
Chadreshwar Sangharsh Samiti for MANSI WAKAL dam issue •
Jhameshwar Mazdoor Kisan Sangh for industrial pollution and displacement
issues • Jangal Jameen Jan Andolan for rights over forest
land and regulation • Jaisamand Vikas Manch for Water use
issues in Jaisamand area
JAGRAN has special interest in the women living in the rural areas.
The rural areas still show glimpses of gender discrimination and with
special development initiatives, JAGRAN is empowering the women and
stimulating women involvement in the community.
