Programme Areas and Area of Operation

India RajasthanArea of Operation
The work of JAGRAN is focussed on the lives of the less fortunate spread over 103 villages in the seven development blocks i.e. Girva, Sarada, Salumber, Dhariyawad, Jhadol and Gogunda of Udaipur district and Aspur block of Dungerpur District with a population of about 2.4 million people. The whole area is mainly inhabited by the tribes; Bhills, Meenas, and Gerasias.

Despite the economical and medical progress, most of the marginal communities in India are still restricted from public health care. JAGRAN has provided traditional health care in the district of Udaipur in Rajasthan and more activities are extended to Alwar, Banswara, Dungarpur, Jodhpur, Bikaner, Jaisalmer, Barmer and Jaipur districts. Trainings and promotion of traditional health products and services are also done in other States of India like Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Chhatisgarh, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Uttranchal and Gujarat.

Programme Areas
The activities of JAGRAN are all in the light of integrated rural development. From the beginning, JAGRAN has been fully committed to improve the lives of the less fortunate of society and to encourage and help them creating sustainable livelihood opportunities. Depending on the initiatives from the tribal communities and the local needs, we implement small rural development projects, ranging from drought relief, traditional health care to education. During the years JAGRAN has invested in rural infrastructures, environmental development activities and capacity enhancement programs. True to its name, Jagran Jan Vikas Samiti (“awakening” in the local language) is dedicated to public awareness and self-development through cooperative efforts.

Traditional Health Systems
Traditional health systems are customarily described in contrast to "modern" or allopathic medicine, which focuses on direct curative intervention. We see the role of traditional healers as complimentary to modern medicine. Traditional health systems are holistic by nature, comprising:
• Emphasis on health as a normative condition
• Integration of lifestyle and environmental factors
• Non-invasive healing and hygiene practices
• Indigenous knowledge traditions (eg, guru-student method)

We conceived the idea of promoting Traditional Health Systems as a viable alternative to costly and scarce allopathic treatment. JJVS has been almost single-handedly responsible for reviving interest in these historically proven traditions. We provided the term "guni" as a uniting title for these traditional healers, and are actively working with the government to obtain official recognition for traditional health systems.
